Ortega Garden Redesign

Designer: Nick Freeman
Location: Ortega neighborhood in Jacksonville, Florida
Garden Style: Eco-conscious & sustainable garden, Naturalistic
We envisioned more than just a garden; we wanted to tell a story of rebirth, sustainability, and the incredible potential hidden within every suburban space. When we first laid eyes on this 1920s Spanish-style home, its garden was largely barren, its driveway crumbling, and overgrown hedges obscured its inherent charm. A complete overhaul was essential, and our goal was clear: to craft a landscape that felt soft, simple, yet wonderfully diverse and dynamic.
Our transformation began in the front yard. We replaced the aging flagstone walkway with a sleek, linear paver path and spacious landing, creating an inviting main entry. To infuse this space with energy, we filled it with numerous colorful wildflowers, drawing the eye and setting a vibrant tone. Surrounding this, a symphony of repeating textures and verdant green tones provides a harmonious backdrop. We also introduced vertical interest with an elegant weeping yaupon holly, a European olive tree, and a stately mulberry.
Moving along the side of the house, we addressed the broken, sunken concrete driveway by extending the same sophisticated pavers from the front. This area is now complemented by a truly unique feature: a "living retaining wall." Along the sloped edge, we intertwined a mix of groundcovers with large, randomly placed coquina boulders. This innovative approach not only stabilizes the soil but also creates a look that is distinct and rarely seen.
This project was a spectacular success, and we genuinely hope it inspires you as you embark on your own landscaping adventures!
